The RKI FI-8000 is a portable gas indicator that measures concentration by optical interferometry, comparing the refractive index of the sample against a reference rather than relying on a consumable electrochemical or catalytic sensor. With no sensing element to drift or poison, calibration stays stable over long service intervals and the instrument has an unusually long working life. Two sampling arrangements are offered, a hand aspirated type and an internal pump suction type. Measuring range depends on the optical chamber length, so chamber length is specified per configuration at 5 mm, 24 mm or 48 mm, and each unit is built to a specified gas and range.

Applications include fumigation monitoring for sulfuryl fluoride, phosphine, methyl bromide and related fumigants, anesthetic agent and vaporizer output verification, solvent vapor measurement, inert and toxic gas work, gas purity checks, and custom high concentration measurements such as propane or vinyl chloride monomer in nitrogen.
