Ion Science SF6 LeakMate portable handheld leak monitor

Ion Science SF6 LeakMate — Portable Handheld SF6 Leak Monitor

The Ion Science SF6 LeakMate is a compact, low-cost portable SF6 leak monitor for routine go/no-go leak checking.

It fills the gap between having no SF6 detection capability at all and committing to a high-sensitivity survey instrument. Because the per-unit cost is low enough to issue one to every technician working on gas-insulated equipment, suspected leaks get checked at the moment they are suspected — rather than waiting for a scheduled survey with a single piece of shared equipment. Operation is simple, with no consumable gas supply to stock or manage.

SF6 has a global warming potential thousands of times that of CO2, an atmospheric lifetime measured in millennia, and a real replacement cost, so early detection returns both environmentally and financially. For pinpointing very small leaks and for compliance-grade quantification, pair the LeakMate with the SF6 LeakCheck P1:p XTL HighSENSE.

Consumables and calibration

SF6 CalCheck units and 0.01%, 0.1% and 1.0% SF6 gas canisters for response verification are listed under CalCheck Units & Calibration Gas. Spares are stocked in SF6 Leak Detector Spares, Upgrades & Accessories.

Note: SF6 CalCheck units and their gas canisters ship as Dangerous Goods under UN1950.

  • Low cost per unit — practical to issue across an entire maintenance crew rather than sharing one instrument
  • Compact and portable — sized for everyday carry, so it is actually on the technician when a leak is suspected
  • Simple go/no-go operation — no training overhead and no interpretation required to get an answer
  • No consumable gas supply — nothing to stock, refill or manage between uses
  • Catches leaks between surveys — closes the window where losses would otherwise go unnoticed
  • Complements survey instruments — escalate confirmed finds to the LeakCheck P1:p for pinpointing and quantification
  • Routine switchgear leak checks — day-to-day verification during substation rounds
  • First-response leak confirmation — checking a suspected leak before escalating to a full survey
  • Post-maintenance spot checks — verifying joints, valves and seals after gas work
  • Gas handling operations — checking hoses, couplings and service carts during fill and recovery
  • Technician-issued detection — equipping a whole crew rather than sharing one instrument
  • Emissions awareness programs — catching losses between formal survey intervals
