Horiba pH Electrode Cleaning Solutions

HORIBA cleaning reagents for restoring fouled pH electrodes. A pH electrode that has become slow to settle, drifts, or will no longer calibrate within specification is usually not worn out — its glass membrane and liquid junction are coated. The correct cleaning reagent will often bring it back rather than requiring a new electrode.

The key is matching the reagent to the fouling. Different deposits need different chemistry, and using the wrong one wastes time and can leave the coating in place. Choose based on what your samples contain.

Which cleaner do I need

  • 220 (part no. 3014028653) — breaks down organic deposits. Use for oils, greases, fats, hydrocarbons, algae and general organic film. The right choice for wastewater, food processing, groundwater with hydrocarbon impact, and environmental samples.
  • 250 (part no. 3200366771) — breaks down protein deposits. Use for blood, dairy, brewing and fermentation, biological media and any sample with significant protein load. Protein coagulates onto glass and will not shift with an organic cleaner.
  • 230 (part no. 3200530494) — dedicated cleaning solution for the 9630-10D pure water pH electrode.

Symptoms that point to cleaning rather than replacement

  • Readings take much longer to stabilize than they used to
  • Calibration slope has fallen but the electrode is not old
  • Readings drift steadily in one direction
  • Visible film, discoloration or deposit on the glass bulb or junction
  • Results differ between the electrode and a known-good one on the same sample

Always recalibrate after cleaning. If performance does not recover after cleaning and fresh filling solution, the electrode has genuinely reached end of life.

Applications

  • Scheduled preventive maintenance on laboratory and field pH electrodes
  • Recovering electrodes used in wastewater, effluent and industrial process samples
  • Food, beverage, dairy and brewing quality control electrodes
  • Restoring electrodes before a calibration or accreditation audit
  • Extending electrode service life to reduce replacement spend
