Horiba ISFET Non-Glass Flat pH Electrode
The HORIBA 0040N-10D is an ISFET pH electrode — a solid-state semiconductor sensor with no glass bulb. Its flat sensing surface measures pH on a droplet, a moist surface or a semi-solid sample, and because there is no glass membrane it will not shatter and needs no wet storage.
ISFET stands for ion-sensitive field-effect transistor. Instead of generating a voltage across a glass membrane, the sensor modulates current through a semiconductor gate in response to hydrogen ion activity at its surface. The practical consequences are what matter: the sensing area is tiny and flat, response is fast, the probe is mechanically robust, and it can be stored dry between uses rather than kept in KCl.
Items
- 0040N-10D (3200862858) — complete ISFET flat pH electrode, supplied with the 0141N sensor tip fitted.
- 0141N (3200862632) — replacement ISFET sensor tip.
Important compatibility note
The 0040N-10D and the 0141N sensor tip are not compatible with the older 0040-10D electrode. Check which body you have before ordering a replacement tip — the part numbers differ by a single character and the parts will not interchange.
Why choose ISFET over glass
- Measures samples too small or too solid for a conventional bulb — a single drop, a cut surface, a paste
- No glass to break in food plants, teaching labs or field kits
- Can be stored dry, so it tolerates intermittent use far better than a glass electrode
- Flat surface wipes clean easily, reducing carryover between samples
Applications
- Food and beverage pH: meat, cheese, dough, fruit, sauces and emulsions
- Surface pH measurement on skin, textiles, paper and coatings
- Cosmetics and personal care formulation testing
- Micro-volume samples in research and clinical settings
- Soil paste and sediment pH
- Any environment where broken glass is unacceptable
